Zählerwerk

The newly proposed roof extension of the historic and listed Zählerwerk of the Kraftwerk Bille Ensemble is based on the original pitched roof shape. However in order to create a historic reference, we have translated the roof typology into a contemporary architectural language.

The Zählerwerk and the adjacent building Um die Ecke, have both a strongly structured façade, hence create a language of coexistence besides being independent buildings. The grid structure of the facade of the Building Um die Ecke turns into a sloped pitched roof structure which on the one hand creates shading and drains water and on the other allows enough natural light to pass through.

In the spirit of the "juxtaposition of opposites", the new intervention of roof extension is to approach the existing historic building structure with a restrained aesthetic and confidently complement it while bringing it to new life.
